WORKSHOP

International tutor Dagmar Binder will teach you how to make collars with feathers, scales and petals.

In this workshop we will add 3-dimensional elements to a basic collar.

With special attention to fibre direction and combination of materials we'll create a well shaped item that perfectly fits the neck and shoulders and receives its individual character with 3d surface design.

You will practice on a smaller item, learn what to pay attention to when planning a garment, experiment with different forms and discover possibilities for other wearable items.

OUR TUTOR

Born in Jena, Germany, Dagmar Binder has always been fascinated by art especially drawing, painting and sculpture, design and most of all textiles. While studying fine art she discovered the versatility and sculptural potential of wool and how coloured fibres can be blended in painterly ways. Her organic looking creations are skillfully shaped by hand in a seamless three dimensional process that is practically waste free. For more information see

Other information

Tools

  • 2x bubble wrap 150X50 cm
  • roller stick min. 120 cm (foam roller, pipe insulation, pool noodle or plastic pipe)
  • plastic gauze ca. 50x50 cm (fly screen, PE-curtain)
  • 2 large garbage bags (120 l from the supermarket) as resist material
  • sprinkler bottle
  • olive- or other plant based soap,
  • 2 towels
  • plastic bowl
  • scissors
  • tape measures
  • felting needle and sponge for small repairs (or needle and sewing thread)
  • pen and paper to take notes

Materials for one collar:

The necessary amount may vary, depending on size and amount of details. For a collar of 110 cm length:

  • Around 150 - 200 g fine merino tops ( 19 mic), also merino/silk blends will be perfect including some commercial prefelt or soft merino batts (max. 50 g) can make the felt denser and the felting process a bit easier. The short, frizzy fibres help to bind the long, straight tops.
  • You are free to choose your favourite colours,  50% of a darker colour for the background and 3 lighter tones for the surface can already be a nice combination. Also variegated mixtures would be wonderful, or every feather can even have a different color – just allow yourself to play!
  • You may want to add some silk fibres to the surface for extra brilliance and color intensity.
